Since it doesn't mention an amount of time has passed sufficient enough to make the apples reach the ground, I'm assuming they're still mid-air?

There are no other factors that I haven't said like sand or animals. You have to focus on the grammar :P

Well, specifically you asked the question as to -how- it is possible. I'd answer "due to the wind",but it seriously doesn't seem right to me.

This was harder riddle than I expected. Also I made it hard for noone to google :)

Key is the number of apples and plural form. Now go figure it out already ^^

Oh shit... 2 apples on the tree first

after the wind blew 1 on the tree 1 on the ground

so nor on the tree nor on the ground are apples :D
